11/18/09 – OKC, OK — Meet Phyllis Jean McCowan and her ‘John’ (click photo for larger image). Phyllis claims she used to be a nurse until her drug addiction caused her to lose everything, including her dignity, and start selling herself on the streets of Oklahoma City for as little as $20. This video still is from a time when she was caught prostituting in a neighborhood park with a man in his work vehicle. Not long after this encounter, Phyllis killed a man on South Robinson Ave. and was subsequently sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Below is an interview I did with Phyllis before she went to prison.

So she had been doing that almost her whole adult life. When she gets out of prison she will be elderly with a history of drug addiction and a serious criminal record and no way to take care of herself.

With God all things are possible. These ladies can be set free by Jesus. God is good and God loves them and so do I.
I have a sister in the same situation.

I don’t understand it! Why can’t these men and women be respectable members of their communities? It’s so sad these women are teaching their children this lifestyle is ok! I’m a mother and this absolutely makes me so sick to my stomach! Where’s their morals? Their values? What’s wrong with people? Drugs, prostitution, other criminal acts and murder???? What’s this world coming to? I’m appauled!

What alternatives are available to them? Drugs and the need to continue getting them seem to speed the dive into prostitution. Addiction is almost impossible to beat alone and it is more effective than a violent pimp at preventing women from getting out of this. For Phyllis Jean she will have a chance at getting sober in jail if the jail is not infiltrated by corrupt guards and administrators. For the other women in the lifestyle, as long as their bodies can handle the drugs they won’t be out of it anytime soon. Is it going to take draconian laws on recreational drug users to stop this? Trying to stop “dealers” alone is not enough… the end user needs to be dealt with. Prison with chemical assisted detox seems to be the only way to get someone off this junk. A few years in jail and away from the substances would do the trick but the cost of that plus the cost in terms of years lost to the person… how far should we go with such a thing?
